Early last year Oklahoma singer/songwriter K.C Clifford appeared on the US TV programme ‘The Biggest Loser’. What is it that she lost? Over 100 lbs. Any dieters out there will realise that this is no mean feat. But this isn’t her greatest achievement.

Maybe winning multiple awards for her talents – including two Woodie Guthrie awards – and producing three wonderful albums, tops mega weight loss. But there is no doubt that this life-changing physical change has influenced her latest album, ‘Orchid’.

Orchid is a beautiful collection of songs that mix calming melodies with powerful, personal lyrics and divine musical arrangements.

Clifford’s vocals are clean and sweet, but don’t be fooled, the words are at times cutting and bitter. There are many twists and turns throughout this album, and it makes it all the more interesting to hear.

Acoustic Live: K.C. Clifford- The Orchid Finds the Light

Somewhere in late spring of last year, I listened to Sonicbids press kits for applicants to the 2009 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s Emerging Artists Showcase. There were many standouts, but one in particular was really special. The singer’s voice came through the ether like mercury — liquid and shining.  I was listening to a preview of Orchid, K.C. Somewhere between hell and sheer happiness, there’s a house by the oceanside. And we’ll fill it with dreams and all the broken things that the morning washed in with the tide…”

K.C. Clifford paints her life with every breath. That golden voice, forged, sharpened and honed for its life’s purpose, bears truth, like a mother cradles a newborn. Read More…

Chicago Sun-Times: K.C. Clifford lives the redemption of her folk music

You might think that the perfect place to start out as an aspiring singer-songwriter would be Nashville, epicenter of country and American roots music and a city absolutely stuffed with music industry types and other aspiring singer-songwriters. But that last part is actually the problem.

“It took three to four years to start finding out who I was as a songwriter, and Nashville, believe it or not, didn’t help,” says K.C. Clifford. “I mean, it did help to be a sponge and soak up the influence of all these amazing other songwriters. You know, as much crap as comes out of Nashville, there’s also a lot of value there and a lot to be learned. But I’m a girl with a guitar. That’s nothing new there. I felt so ordinary there. It wasn’t until I got outta town and started playing for people who were dry cleaners instead of an audience that was nothing but other songwriters that I finally started finding out who I was.” Read More…
